Slag is also called molten slag. It is a melt generated during the pyrometallurgy process that floats on the surface of liquid substances such as metal. Its composition is mainly composed of oxides (silica, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide), containing sulfides and a small amount of metals.
According to different metallurgical processes, slag can be divided into smelting slag, refining slag and synthetic slag. According to the properties of slag, it can be divided into basic slag, acidic slag and neutral slag. Many slags have important uses. For example, blast furnace slag can be used as cement raw material. High phosphorus residue can be used as fertilizer. Slag containing vanadium and titanium can be used as raw materials for refining vanadium and titanium respectively. Some slag can be used to make slag cement, slag bricks, slag glass, etc.
